Box League Rules (Updated 2/28/2024)

The Box League is administered using software application Club Locker provided by US Squash, the national governing body and membership organization for the sport of squash in the United States. In order to view and enter scores you must be registered with Club Locker. You DO NOT need to purchase a membership but you must be registered.  See the FAQ above for more information

A Box League is a low maintenance loosely organized “ladder” that encourages play among participants. You will play against players that are near to your ability level. It is played based on a calendar month and it is easy for players to join or drop out as the “Boxes” are reset each month. The commitment from players is to make every effort to play your matches assigned for the month.

The intent of the league is to provide a regular way to encourage players to stay active and to challenge themselves by playing matches against other players at a similar level. There are no prizes, no awards (other than for streaks of perfect attendance!) and no glory in winning your box. This league is designed to promote play and introduce players to others that can provide stimulating and enjoyable matches on the squash court. It is a recreational league!

The way it works is simple… all those interested are loosely ranked according to league, “squash reputation” results when possible and randomly for new or beginners. Players are broken into groups of 4-8 depending on the total number of participants. Each group is a “box” that has a month to play a mini round-robin among the other players in the same box. The list and boxes are reset each calendar month. Scheduling is completely flexible and is entirely up to each player.

Each month all players in each Box will be emailed the contact information for other players in the same box and a URL for score entry. You must keep track of all the game point scores as they are needed for tie break determination. When you finish a match the winner (or loser if you agree to it) goes online and enters the scores. The results are posted online so you’ll know your results and status during the course of the monthly cycle.

League Format:

  • Boxes will be set up monthly. Usually the boxes will be posted in the first few days of the calendar month.
  • Each box will usually consist of 4-8 players, playing each other once during the month. The typical player will play 3-7 matches a month.
  • Each match is best 3 of 5 games. Games are to 11, Point a Rally scoring.
  • Scoring Points will be awarded for each game won, and an additional point for each match won. 3-0 win gives 6 points to the winner and 1 to the loser, a 3-1 win gives 5/2, and a 3-2 win give 4/3.
  • Highest total Scoring Points wins the Box
  • In the case of a tie, the winner is the winner of the head-to-head match. In a three way tie, the winner is the player who allows the fewest points to the other players.

League Rules:

  • Generally, the winner of each box will move up one level, while the loser will move down a level. The 2-5 remaining middle players remain in the same box for next month’s play. If there are players joining and dropping from the league this often disrupts the normal promotion/demotion of players. US Squash player rankings and recent match history are used to reset boxes impacted by the add/drops of players. The League Administrator’s decision is final.
  • Each month the entire league’s boxes are reset. If there are significant additions/deletions from the roster of players this will shuffle all boxes below.
  • The League administrator reserves the right to change the order and ranking when determining the boxes.
  • The number of participants in the Box League may impact the players assigned to each box each month.
  • If you sign up and commit to a league spot for a month you are expected to play your matches. If you don’t you’ll just piss off the other players in the league.
  • PCS Code of Conduct rules apply to this league. By participating you agree to abide by the code and these rules.
  • Protective Eyeware is mandatory. It is a player’s obligation to refuse to play a match if his opponent does not have protective eyeware. Penalty on first offense is being dropped from the league.
  • You must be an active member of the or PCS in order to play.
  • Matches will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable time by both players.
  • The official ball of the Box League is a One Dot ball. If both players agree an alternative ball may be used. If a single player wishes to use a One Dot Ball that will be the ball for the match.
  • Matches may be played at any time during the month but must be completed and reported by the last day of the month by 8pm.
  • The winning player is responsible for Entering Scores within 24 hours of match play. Scores can be entered by following these simple steps:
  • Any player who fails to show for a box match that has been mutually scheduled will forfeit the match . The box coordinator will verify the ‘no show’ by speaking with both players involved. The player who was present at the scheduled time will be given a default victory and the match will count as being played for that person.
  • Players must complete at least one of their matches to be automatically included in the next month’s box.
  • Players may enter or exit the box league for the following month, by submitting a request through the signup form on this website before the end of the current month. This is the only sure way to enter or leave the box league. Calling or sending an email to the league administrator is not encouraged and may result in your request “slipping through the cracks”.
  • League administrator is Greg Born. His decisions are final.
