Fundraising begins for court renovation at the Portland YMCA

In mid May the YMCA began fundraising among members and friends to renovate and reconfigure the existing courts at the Portland YMCA. The goals and timing are aggressive but reasonable. Our hopes are to have funds raised by mid June to allow us to begin work in July and finish before Labor Day weekend. The end result will gaining a fixed back wall international sized squash court. The existing single flex court and 2 American sized courts will remain.
The specific work to be done is:
  • Court 3, existing racquetball court
    • Add a fixed glass back wall to make a squash only court
    • Open cinderblock entrance wall and trim to match existing flex court
    • Add inexpensive bleacher style seating for spectators with room for gym bags underneath
    • Sand floor
    • paint and stripe as a squash court only. Lines in red
    • Add regulation permanent tin (solid to the floor)
  • Flex court AND Court 3
    • Strip the hit wall of the existing 9 coats of paint and refinish it properly
    • Patch small cracks in side walls
  • 2 Smaller American sized courts
    • Patch sidewalls as needed.

To do all this we need your help. We need financial donations to move this project forward. Members of the fundraising committee are in the process of reaching out to all of the known squash players at the Y. Please give what you can. Our goal is to raise over $20,000 in just a few short weeks.

Squash is booming at the Yand all indications are that it will continue to grow. The box league has had over 70 participants in April and May and will probably remain over 50 for the summer. Holly has successfully created and filled a high school squash program and will expand offerings to include younger age groups. Clinic and drop in play remain very popular. Each week we hear from new players looking to join and play. The court renovations come along at the perfect time to give us more room to grow and play!
