Portland Community Squash is a local organization focused on a community effort to bring courts and classrooms to Portland, Maine for the benefit of unmet adult demand, school programs, and an urban squash program.
Portland Community Squash will be buzzing with adults playing league matches, school teams occupying a few courts for practice, and the urban squash program transitioning from the courts to the classrooms. The regulation singles courts and the doubles court will be complimented with a squash professional that will give lessons, lead clinics, and reach out to the member base to organize matches and leagues. The combination of a professional and a great facility will facilitate the growth of a strong adult squash community and the birth of a comprehensive junior program.
Adult Squash: Family and individual memberships will be available to ensure Portland adults can enjoy the top-notch facility. Having a professional and high caliber courts will elevate Portland’s squash talent to a new level. The PCS courts would enable Portland to draw players up from all around New England to play league matches and even tournaments.
Junior Squash: PCS is excited to partner with local public and private schools to spur middle and high school squash programs. Teams can reserve court time to practice and the facility can also be used come match day. Clinics and lessons will also be a great alternative for kids who may not have a school program to participate in.
Urban Squash: Portland Community Squash also hopes to join the urban squash movement by developing a program for at-risk youth, comparable to the SquashBusters (squashbusters.org) model in Boston. SquashBusters has graciously offered to guide PCS and share their model to ensure that PCS has the greatest impact on our surrounding community. Squash teaches hard work, accountability, and a healthy lifestyle – characteristics that are proven to create leaders in every neighborhood.
