Newport Steamer Tournament details announced!

Resurrected in 2012 after a few years off the Newport Steamer has grown into a fantastic summer squash event in New England. Last summer nearly 150 participants enjoyed play on fantastic courts in Newport.

From the tournament directors Chris Smith and Pat Cosquer:

Now in 2015 we have taken things to another level in delivering a great squash experience as we offer two weekends of Squash. US Squash has accredited us with a Gold Level Jr Tournament which is really exciting. We weren’t going to let our Jr Silver and Adult Open go away, so we are all in for two back to back weekends of great squash, fun, and enjoyment of one of the best places to be in the summer.

April Box Leagues posted

New Box Leagues are now available for

Large changes in both leagues as players returning to the Box Leagues after taking time off to play in the Winter League. Several new players including yet another Colby grad that hits a pretty mean squash ball! Please keep spreading the word and letting your friends know that you are an active squash player!

I will be updating the FAQ for the Box Leagues to include an additional piece of information I’ll be using for determining placement of players. The new piece is the recently revamped ratings and ranking algorithm from USSquash.com. I spoke at length with some of the developers and have analyzed the recently updated rankings and they look good. They will help in cases where existing players are joining the league after a lengthy absence and in determining splits in cases where the other indicators are mixed.

Winter League Champions!

Last night the Portland YMCA Winter League held it’s annual Playoffs Finals to determine the League Champions and Consolation winners. We were fortunate to have been able to use the newly renovated Bates College Squash Center for our final league night! The evening was filled with exciting squash and good times including pizza and beverages.

This year’s final match was exciting and filled with a roller coaster of drama! The unlikely winning team started the playoffs seeded 2nd to last after a dismal season of only 2 wins. The Teal Seals, captained by Chip Harlow, managed to sneak through a couple of key matches on the shoulders of great play by various team members to end up in last night’s championship match against Harvey’s Green Hornets. The Green Hornets had the second best record after the regular season.

With all other play completed and matches tied at 4-4 and Paul McGonnigal and Jan Van Voorst tied at 2-2 in games the tension in the air was obvious. Jan pulled out to a commanding lead of 9-4 before Paul managed to turn the match around. He rallied to 9-9 then gifted Jan with an easy unforced error. Jan returned the favor and Paul held strong to win 12-10.

In the consolation round Doug’s White Rabbits managed to steal a victory from Teddy’s Purple Possums through the clever use of substitutes. Teddy lost a tight 5 game match 11-9 in the 5th game after inspired and remarkable play to bring his team close to victory.
